Thanksgiving Food Allergies-Holiday Allergy Free Recipes

The first thing I want to make clear is I know how Thanksgiving food allergies affect your holiday, I struggle even today with this time of the year being on a strict diet of my own. I never look forward to this time of the year simply because I am unable to eat most of the traditional foods, so I want everyone to know I truly do understand if you are living with food allergies and food intolerances.

Common Trigger Thanksgiving Meals

One thing I really miss is the turkey stuffing, and the reason I am not able to eat the stuffing is I am intolerant to gluten. It is a fact many people are now going gluten-free, and the majority of them share they have more energy and less digestive system issues.  Even if you are not intolerant these are hard on your digestive system, and I even have experienced no more acid reflux simply by changing my diet.  The best part about this is you can go without this plant protein for a few weeks, and if it is causing any of your symptoms you will notice a positive change right away. Dr. Hallet wrote an article on the most common foods from the traditional Thanksgiving meal that are triggered to our symptoms, so let us check the doctor’s list to see what we should watch out for?

  • Milk
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Wheat
  • Soybeans

I highly urge you to take the extra time to read the ingredients on the packages, and now it is a law a company must list these ingredients with so many people with allergies today.

Is Your Thanksgiving Turkey Allergy Free

For the majority of families, turkey is the traditional meal. So are these safe for people with allergies to consume, and one of the biggest concerns for me is if the stuffing was prepared in the bird. You see unless you stuff them with gluten-free stuffing, you just contaminated the main course of this holiday meal.  Now, this is not a big deal for those of you who are tolerant, but someone like me, just a very small portion will ruin my holiday making me extremely sick for days.

Where Gluten Can Be Hiding

After years of getting extremely ill from products that I thought were free of gluten, I want to stress the importance of knowing about this plant protein being hidden in many foods. So how can we know which products may be hiding this from us, and here are a list of just some for you to watch out for?

  • Sauces
  • Gravy
  • Seasonings
  • Broth
  • Dinner Rolls
  • Stuffing
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Soups

Just about anything that has a thickener could be holding hidden gluten, and another thing you must consider is if you are having both gluten and gluten-free on the same table this plant protein could be spread accidentally? What many people don’t understand is if one person uses their knife to butter their food, they could possibly be contaminating the butter with gluten without even realizing it?

One of the worse foods on the holidays are the ones that contain hidden gluten

Gluten-Free Substitutes

With so many people intolerant or allergic to gluten you can find many substitutes, and below I have listed just some examples to give you an idea.

  • Stuffing
  • Flour
  • Dinner rolls
  • Bread
  • Soups
  • Sauces
  • Seasonings
  • Pasta

You might also find it interesting some of us who are gluten intolerant also can’t eat regular potatoes, and what you want to do is substitute with sweet potatoes instead. Other foods that contain no gluten to avoid are tomatoes. eggplant, and peppers, so this means that anything that contains any of these also could possibly be a trigger for your symptoms as well.

Thanksgiving Meal Alternatives

I have some alternatives for you to consider. Believe me, Thanksgiving food allergies really can spoil your holiday by eating trigger foods that are hidden from you. Let us now take a peek at some of the alternatives I have to share with you, and I hope this is helpful to any of you who have a bad relationship with the most common allergy foods?

Mayo Clinic Allergy Tips

Suffering from allergies my entire life I am not a stranger to how miserable you can be, I also suffer from autoimmune diseases that make my life even more challenging with what I am able to eat. so let us see what The Mayo Clinic has to say below.

  • Always read food labels, even brands you have been using for years can change their ingredients at any time. So it is better to be safe than sorry, and it just is not worth suffering when it can be avoided.
  • Whenever you are out it is important to be extra careful, and the Mayo Clinic recommends when you are in doubt it is best to not take the chance.
  • Caregivers should be aware of how important your child’s diet is for them, and as a parent be sure you can trust your caregivers with your child when you are not around.

Even though the tips above are more of a lifestyle they are very important, so let us see what else the Mayo Clinic has to say?

People Who Are Naturally Grateful For What They Have Are Happier People

What To Ask Your Doctor?

If you suspect food is causing you symptoms it might be time to talk to your doctor, and for many people, they are not sure what to ask their doctor? So here are some questions you might want to consider talking about at your appointment, and these come from The Mayo Clinic website.

  • Could my symptoms be food-related?
  • Are there any tests?
  • Is this a temporary condition or long-term?
  • What treatment do you recommend?
  • What are my alternative options?
  • How do I manage my existing health issues with this condition?
  • Dietary restrictions
  • Do I need to see a specialist?
  • Is there a generic version of the prescription you are providing me
  • Ask for any resources you can acquire online

So this is a good guide for those of you seeking information, and let us move on to the next paragraph now.

This holiday is very important for us all to be grateful for the things we have, and for any of you interested in some prayers I have included some below for you.

Moravian Blessing

Come, Lord Jesus, our guest to be
And bless these gifts
Bestowed by Thee.
And bless our loved ones everywhere,
And keep them in Your loving care.

We Gather Together Hymn

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!

We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

Thanksgiving

For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends.

Allergy Friendly Halloween Candy-Trick Or Treat Tips

Are you going to be participating in trick or treat this year, and if so are you aware of the best allergy friendly Halloween candy on the market today? I become inspired to provide you this article from my last blog post non-candy alternatives, so if you missed that one you might want to read it using the link above.

Is It A Cold Or Allergy?

Many times parents are not sure if their children might have an allergy or a cold, and even your child’s physician is not always sure? Both of these provide similar symptoms, and that is the reason sometimes it can be confusing to know what one they are experiencing.

Colds And Allergies Common Signs

  • Both of these can come out of nowhere, you might be fine one minute and an hour later starting to feel symptoms.
  • Coughing is common in both colds and allergies
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Headaches

Now let us look at just how the common cold affects your child, and maybe this will help you understand which of these is causing the issues above?

Common Cold Symptoms

  • Coughing up mucous the color of yellow or green, and it will be extremely thick as well.
  • Most often a fever can be present when you have a cold, but many times it is so mild parents are not aware their child even has a fever.
  • Spring and Fall are when the majority of kids catch a cold, and usually, the symptoms are more severe this time of the year.
  • The majority of children will be complaining about muscle aches, so these are some of the facts to consider.

Allergy Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tummy Aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory Issues
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Watery Eyes
  • Dry Mouth, Throat, and Eyes

In severe cases, a child can experience their throat to swollen causing them an emergy trip to the hospital, so food allergies are not something to take lightly and should be treated by a physician if the symptoms are severe.

I Am God’s Song

allergy friendly halloween candy
I Am God’s Song is a Free Booklet provided by the Unity organization

Unity poet laureate James Dillet Freeman once told a close friend he thought the heart of Unity was “words that change lives.”

His inspiring words and beautiful poems have certainly touched hearts and encouraged friends of Unity for many years.

We’ve collected the wisdom of James Dillet Freeman and his best-loved poems in the latest booklet from Unity, I Am God’s Songavailable for you to request today.

Freeman’s poetry still has the power to renew faith, provide comfort in times of grief, and inspire us to celebrate the wonder of joy and love we know as individual expressions of God.

It’s a true keepsake booklet—the kind of touchstone you’ll find yourself returning to as part of your prayer practice again and again.

Peanuts And The Tree Nut Family

You will find many of the allergy friendly Halloween candy doesn’t contain peanuts or any of the tree nut family, and both of these are two different types of food groups I want to make it clear before going any further with this article. You need to know peanuts are actually a bean and not a nut at all. So you could be allergic to one of these without the other, and this is very important to know. Technically they are considered a legume crop, I just wanted everyone to understand there is a difference between these two foods.

The Tree Nut Family

For anyone with a tree nut issue, I have included the most common ones people eat and could be triggers for allergies.

  • Almonds
  • Brazil nuts
  • Cashews
  • Chestnuts
  • Filberts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Macadamia
  • Hickory nuts
  • Pecans
  • Walnuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Pistachio

Many people usually are allergic to all tree nuts, but you could very well be able to eat some and not others. The only real way to know for sure is by trial and error or having your physician give you an allergy test, I warn you these tests are quite expensive plus all insurance companies might not cover them. You will want to check before having these done, so this is just something to think about before you go through with allergy tests.

Common Tree Nut Foods

Even though this article is focusing on allergy friendly Halloween candy, I feel if you are allergic to tree nuts it is important to know what foods you might want to avoid.

  • Candy
  • Baked goods
  • Ice cream
  • Puddings
  • Cereals
  • Granola
  • Trail mix
  • Bread
  • Honey
  • Veggie burgers
  • Almond milk
  • Almond extract

Now that we have the tree nut family taken care of, I am going to do the same for the peanuts as well. The reason I am putting so much effort to inform you of these two food groups is they are the most dangerous, you will find some people have actually lost their lives to these and others have been hospitalized. So I feel these two deserve the most attention in this article, so let us now see what foods to avoid or at least be careful about eating.

  • Candy
  • Desserts
  • Pastries
  • Condiments
  • Cooking aids
  • Chocolate bars
  • Egg rolls
  • Beer nuts
  • Artificial flavoring

One thing you really need to do is read the ingredients if you have a peanut allergy, you will find more foods than you realize may have been used in some form. Flour is one ingredient in many vegetarian and gluten-free products they use peanut flour or possibly even peanut oil, and peanuts are the most dangerous allergy for many children.

allergy friendly halloween candy
Peanuts and Tree Nuts are two of the most dangerous allergies for children

Worse Allergy Time Of The Year For Kids

Amazingly Halloween is the highest reported allergy season for children, so common sense tells us it more likely is from all the treats they are eating. News Max wrote an article on the facts proving this, so if you want to read their post feel free to use the link in this paragraph. Here is a list of the symptoms News Max provided for parents to watch out for, so I have listed these below for you.

  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Lip swelling
  • Tongue swelling
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Wheezing
  • Dizzy spells
  • Passing out
  • Tummy pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Anxiety

So you can see how dangerous allergies for children can be from these two food groups, and it is nothing to take lightly. Every child will not experience the same symptoms or the same severity, but these are the most common signs to watch out for.

Allergy Friendly Halloween Candy

Now comes the most important part of my article, what is the safest candy for your child with food allergies? You will find if you read the ingredients chocolate bars are high on the list to check carefully, but I have provided you the list of the safest trick or treat candy for your child this Halloween.

  • Swedish Fish is a favorite of many children, so this is the number one choice on the list I found.
  • The second one on the list might suprise you as it has me, and it is made by a company by the name of No Whey Chocolates.
  • Skittles is not a new name to most of us, I can remember my own sons eathing these all the time when they were boys.
  • Gimbal’s gourmet jelly beans is another new name to me, but I would not turn down a good gourmet jelly bean that is allergy-friendly.
  • What kid does not love Smores, and you can trust the brand Enjoy Life for smores for your entire family.
  • Sour Patch Kids is next on the list, but I am not familiar with this candy, but I have heard and seen it in my local Walmart store.
  • Star Bursts is another option you can consider, so if your children like this brand it is even safe for them.

Now you know some safer options for your children with allergies, but remember these are brands that contain none of the most common allergy ingredients. You can find even more depending on what your child might be allergic to, but these are allergy-safe no matter what your boys and girls might be allergic to.

Alternative Non Candy Halloween Treat Ideas-Children Living With Food Issue

Today I decided to write an article on alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas for children, and the reason for this is with so many kids experiencing food sensitivities and allergies this might benefit some families. If this is interesting to you, I have inserted a link above to take you to the best selling choices Amazon provides. I will earn a small commission from any of your purchases, which will be used to improve Free Family Solutions.

Food Allergy Triggers In Candy

The reason I chose this topic is that I struggle with many foods from my own food allergies and sensitivities, and the worse part is many times parents might not even be aware their child is sensitive to what is in the candy. How many of you can afford to have your children tested, and from my own experience those tests are not even always accurate. For any family interested if your insurance does not cover these tests you can be talking a whole lot of money, but did you know you can purchase home tests from Amazon for much less?

  • Milk
  • Soy
  • Peanuts
  • Eggs
  • Tree Nuts
  • Coconut
  • Gluten (Wheat, Rye, and Barley)
  • Modified Food Starch

I have provided you the most commonly known products in candy to be aware of, but I want to let you know even if none of these allergens are in the candy they can be contaminated when the company produces other products.  You will find very few companies that are going to take the time to clean and sterilize their equipment before preparing the safer alternatives, and in very small writing you will find this on the packages by law. Before sharing the alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas, Let us look at some of my favorite candy brands.

Reeses Peanut Butter Cups Ingredients

Being sensitive to peanuts I have to be careful how many Reeses Peanut Butter Cups I eat, but I am lucky enough to get away with being able to have them in moderation. Beware peanuts are one of the ingredients in candy more children are sensitive to, and some kids can end up in the hospital or even worse by eating just one peanut butter cup. The reason for this is their throats can inflame causing them unable to breathe, so this is my major concern for parents and their children.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa
  • Butter
  • Chocolate
  • Non-Fat Milk
  • Milk Fat
  • Lactose
  • Soy
  • Lecithin
  • PGPR
  • Preservatives (TBHQ)
  • Peanuts
  • Dextrose
  • Salt

You might be surprised just how many ingredients are in this candy brand, and as much as I love them myself I must be extra careful how many I eat at any time. I am always shopping for alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas myself, so together we can go shopping together.

alternative non candy halloween treat ideas
As much as kids love peanut butter it can be an allergy trigger food

M & Ms Ingredients

Even if you choose the M & Ms without peanuts you still might not be completely safe, and besides there being other allergy triggers in regular M & Ms, there still could be traces of peanuts as well. You will find this on their packages in small print, so to be safe you should avoid this brand completely if you are allergic to peanuts.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Chocolate
  • Skim Milk
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Lactose
  • Milk Fat
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Salt
  • Artificial Flavoring
  • Sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Corn Syrup
  • Dextrin
  • Artificial Coloring
  • Gum Acacia

I have only listed the ingredients in the regular M & Ms, but I am sure you can see there are several possible allergy triggers in this not to count there might be traces of peanuts as well.

Snicker Bar Ingredients

Another one of my favorites is Snicker Bars, and again it is full of peanuts so is one I am not able to have very often as well. If you start reading ingredients you might be surprised how many allergens there might be waiting for your kids, so as parents we do need to start reading the packages carefully before giving them to our children.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Chocolate
  • Skim Milk
  • Lactose
  • Milk Fat
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Artificial Flavoring
  • Peanuts
  • Corn Syrup
  • Palm Oil
  •  Hydrated Soy Bean Oil
  • Salt
  • Egg Whites

I will not go through all the companies and their ingredients, but I just wanted to list several of my favorites that I am not able to eat regularly myself with you. Now I am going to share with you the candy bars with fewer allergy triggers. So if you are not eating alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas, you at least are getting to know what to ingredients and brands to avoid.

Ghost quotes for your imagination

“In Eastern culture, people see ghosts, people talk about ghosts… it’s just accepted. And in Western culture it’s just not.” — Jessica Alba

“I fully believe in ghosts. I have, my entire life. The first house I ever lived in was haunted. There was a grave of a man in the backyard. I was just a baby then, but my parents would tell me that every night, at the same time, they would hear someone walking up the stairs.” — Meaghan Rath

Better Candy Bar Choices

To be honest with you there is no brand on the market that I know of that is healthy for us, but we all need to indulge every once in a while with something yummy to put into our tummy. So next, I am going to share with you the brands that do contain fewer triggers.

  • Hershey’s Bars
  • 3 Musketeers
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Butterfinger
  • Baby Ruth

The list above brands contains three or less allergens, so these are healthier choices for your kids. I still recommend you read the packages, you never know when a company might change their ingredients.

Best Choices For Your Kids

I did happen to find some that don’t contain any of the known ingredients to avoid, and below I have listed them for you just in case any of you parents are interested.

  • Smarties
  • Sour Patch Kids
  • Dum Dum Lollipops
  • Nerds
  • Life Savers
  • Skittles

I just want to mention one other good choice if your child has no problems with soy is Jolly Ranchers, so these are good alternatives for candy choices that are safer for your kids.

Parents Prayer For COVID-19

As parents, we fear more for our children than we do ourselves when it comes to the COVID-19 virus, so for all of your families in need of prayer for your children today I have shared this one below for all of you.

Lord,
I admit I fear the unknown. I fear how others will act during this time of uncertainty, how long this will last, and not knowing what the world will look like for my children when this is over. Father, calm my heart. Help me to trust you. Please keep my children safe from this virus. Please allow me to stay healthy so that I can take care of them. Help me to rest at night, so that I have energy and clarity of mind. Keep me focused on you, so that I can fill my children with encouragement and not panic. Help us to not grow weary of one another while we’re home together for who knows how long. Show me how to make the most of this time and disciple my children with a new urgency.

Amen

HAUNTED HOUSE DECORATIONS IDEAS-FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES TEENS

Alternative Non Candy Halloween Treat Ideas

The holidays are very difficult for me, you see I have many food allergies and sensitivities plus intolerances. So this time of the year is a challenge for me to stay healthy,  and when you are not able to eat the majority of the goodies everyone else can it is very hard. As a boy, it was even worse being tempted with all my grandmother’s home-made specials she never made any other time of the year. I am totally intolerant of gluten and dairy products, so you can just imagine how the aroma of the traditional foods are tempting for me.  Let us see what is available today for kids with food allergies and intolerances, and this will never be as good as the goodies we are missing, but they can make the holiday easier for the children.

  • Bubbles are always a good choice for kids, and now I hear you can even get Halloween bubbles.
  • Another goodie to spice up a child’s holiday is play dough, and I can remember my grandmother always preparing me her special home-made play dough
  • I have never met any boy or girl who does not love freeze pops, so this can be a very good alternative to candy.
  • As a boy I always received Halloween activity books and stickers, I also loved puzzle books so I often received a good supply on the holidays.
  • Stamper kits are a favorite especially for toddlers, and at their age, these kits are a much better choice than a ton of candy.
  • Coloring books are also a popular substitute, and when you purchase one with the holiday theme you can’t go wrong.
  • Art & Craft Kits for kids is way better than a bunch of candy, so consider introducing your child to a new hobby.
  • Glow Stick necklaces and bracelets will impress any child, and this is something they may have never received before now?
  • Skull rings could be a treat your own child would cherish, you can get these in art creativity kits at a very affordable price.
  • Something called slime is very popular with children, I even notice my teenage niece still has this from time to time.

I try to recommend parents provide their children books as much as possible, so I have some books that might be great choices as alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas.

You can get these and many more great choices, and you can check these out with this link that will take you to the Amazon website.

Thank you again for reading my articles on Free Family Solutions, and feel free to leave me a comment or two at anytime below.

Great Family Halloween Activities Beyond Trick Or Treating

Are you in search of some great family Halloween activities beyond trick or treating this year, I have heard when out grocery shopping parents talking about if it is safe for their children to go out trick or treating or not? So hearing this inspired me to write this article, and today we are going to look at some ways to celebrate this holiday at home.

What Parents Need To Consider

I just read this article with tips for parents on participating in the traditional Halloween celebrating, so what I am going to share with you came from the website ABC.go news. What you are going to read below came from Dr. Edith Brancho-Sanchez, and here is the prescription straight from the doctor.

  1. The very first thing to consider according to Dr. Edith is how the virus is affecting your own community, You want to look for a 5% or less of people testing positive to the COVID-19 virus, and of course, as the doctor suggests in her article the lower the percentage the safer it will be for your child.
  2. Dr. Edith’s next suggestion is to consider your family situation, and the first she shares in the article is are there any pregnant women living in your home? Other members that are high-risk are very young children such as infants and toddlers, you also want to be aware if you have any seniors living with you with chronic autoimmune health problems.
  3. It is very important for you to come up with a good plan, and one of the ways she recommends is talking to your neighbors. How can your neighborhood celebrate Halloween, but still stay as safe as possible?
  4. The first part of your plan must be how to keep social distancing and secondly, how to give out the goodies to the children?
  5. Everyone must wear masks to participate, plus the homes with high-risk people living there might not want to be involved this year. So you need a system to alert everyone who is going to give out candy and who is not, and some of your neighbors might be interested in setting out their treats instead of Halloweeners coming to their door?
  6. Next, the doctor recommends everyone get a flu shot, and this is not to protect you from the COVID-19 but the regular flu is going to be around as well at this time.
  7. Another suggestion is to set up a hand sanitizer for the children before they can receive their treats from you, also going with individually wrapped treats is highly recommended.

Dr. Edith concludes her article stating that even if you do all the things she suggests above, you still could get the virus, so these are the things parents need to consider before Halloween arrives.

Jack O Lantern Pumpkin Decorating

We all know how this is a tradition many of our children look forward to each year, and in fact, I am sure there are many adults who can’t wait to show off their creativity. You don’t have to carve a jack o lantern, you are able to participate in this tradition in many other ways.  Below are some of DIY Networks ideas that might interest you, and at the least get you inspired with some ideas of your own.

More Halloween Activities To Explore

Next, I am going to share some ideas from Pathways.org, and if you find any of these interesting and desire to learn more I inserted a link above for you.

  • Decorating Pumpkins once again is mentioned in their article as well, so this sounds to be something we all should make a point to add to our stay at home Halloween ideas.
  • Corn Mazes is their next suggestion, you would need to plan this in the spring or contact a farmer who might allow you to set up a corn maze.
  • Haunted Houses are always a fun option, but with the COVID-19 virus, I doubt if any haunted houses are going to be open this year?
  • Scavenger Hunts is their next suggestion in their article, and this is always a great choice for kids. You could replace trick or treating with a scavenger hunt, and the children could fill their bags with what they can find.
  • Werewolf Tag is a new one for me, how about you? So if you are interested in how this works, I recommend you visit their website with the link above.
  • Flashlight Tag is another good idea that children would love, so we are getting some interesting alternatives for Halloween now.
  • Lantern Making sounds like a great family Halloween activities beyond trick or treating to me, and if you are like me I am really interested in learning more about making a lantern.

Now we have some more ideas we can consider if we must celebrate at home this year, and with the ideas so far I am sure the children will have a great time.

  • 2 Cups of Sugar
  • 4 Large Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup of Milk
  • Zest of One Orange Finely Grated
  • 1/2 Cup of Fresh Orange Juice

  • Candy Sticks

Gee whiz, I never realized how many ingredients it requires for cupcakes before now, and if I add known all the ingredients it took I would have appreciated more when my grandmother made them for me as a boy.

Let’s Get To Making Cupcakes

  1. The easy part to get started heat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. You are going now to beat the butter and sugar at medium speed with your electric mixer until your mixture is creamy, now you are ready to add your eggs one at a time.
  3. Add your milk and the next 3 ingredients in a small bowl,
  4. Combine your flour, baking powder, and salt, and now you will add to your butter mixture alternately with your milk mixture.
  5. Beat at slow speed until blended after each addition, stir in your orange flavoring next.
  6. Place the paper baking cups in 2- 12 cup muffin pans and be sure to coat with the cooking spray, spoon your mixture into cups up to 2/3 full.
  7. Bake between 12-15 minutes or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean, you will allow cooling for approximately 10 minutes.
  8. Time to prepare the frosting, you will beat the first four ingredients at medium speed with your electric mixer until creamy.
  9. Gradually add your powdered sugar, beat at low speed until blended well. Beat at high speed now approximately 2 minutes or until creamy, add your juice and food coloring. Beat at low speed with an electric mixer until blended well, beat at high speed 2 minutes or until creamy.
  10. You are going to be filling each cupcake with your Halloween orange frosting, read on to learn how to do this.
  11. Insert the end of a wooden spoon in the center of the cupcake, you will now fill a zip-lock freezer bag with your filling or frosting.
  12. Snip about 1/4 of one corner of the zip-lock freezer bag, and next just fit the corner of the bag into the hole in the center of your cupcake. Squeeze very gently until filling or frosting comes to the top of the cupcake, you are ready to frost your cupcakes next.
  13. Frost each cupcake with a metal knife, and then top off with your assorted candies, sprinkles, and one of the candy sticks.

Whew, this is a lot of work for the little ghosts and goblins, and now I appreciate my grandmother’s cupcakes even more than ever after learning how much work she went through to make these for me. I inserted a link below just in case you wish to go on the website, and I thank you for reading great family Halloween activities beyond trick or treating so far.

Tips For Supporting Your Child With Autism During Halloween

Tips for supporting your child with autism during Halloween is very personal to me, you see my oldest son was born with this disorder. If you are a parent or grandparent I am sure you understand how the holidays are different for your child, so I am going to be sharing not only tips but also family resources so you can get assistance when you need it.

 Infant Autism Signs

Today one out of ever 68 children shows signs of this disorder, and if you have a son they are over 4 times the risk than girls are. My son was not diagnosed until he was already in school, but with more knowledge of the symptoms with babies and infants we can start helping our children much sooner. Our first responsibility as parents and grandparents is to understand what to watch out for, so these are some things you should be watching for in your very young child.

  • Avoiding eye contact even at this age is one of the most common signs, so paying more attention to your child’s eyes is something you need to be aware of.
  • The next thing is to notice how they react with interaction, you will find the majority of babies avoid interacting. Many will not look or listen to other people, so this is another symptom of this disorder.
  • Oddly I remember my son didn’t babble like my other sons, and at the time his physician’s just told me all babies don’t start the baby talk at the same time.

Infants are more difficult to diagnose until they become older many times, but by knowing more about what to look for can help you get them treatment earlier.

Toddler Autism Symptoms

As your baby grows from their infancy stage to their toddler stage the symptoms are more obvious, you as parents and grandparents should start noticing something is different about your child around this time.

  • Interacting with other children is almost never done, you will experience your little one prefers to play by themselves. So early socialization skills is a sure symptom to be aware of, and it is not that they don’t get along with other children, they just prefer to keep to themselves.
  • This was not a problem for my oldest son since he is high-functioning, but many children struggle to communicate with even their own families.
  • Repetitive behavior was very obvious with my own son as a toddler, and he often would line up objects that were not toys. He would spend hours going through the canned-goods lining them up, so often children with autism will show repetitive behaviors that are odd.
  • Hand flapping was very obvious with my own son, and from what I have learned this is very common among many children. You also might notice your child does hand waving as well, and this can be very distracting for some families.
  • You might notice the toddler rocking back and forth at times, and this is another common symptom to be on the outlook for.
  • My boy never did this one, but twirling is something some kids might do as well. So these are repetitive habits you might notice your toddler doing, and as parents and grandparents consult your baby’s physician if you notice any of these behaviors.
  • The last of these you might notice is the lack of pointing to objects, and also my son never showed interest by gesturing towards any of his toys. Actually my boy had very little interest in regular toddler activities and playthings, so this is my last symptom to share with you from my own experience with my own child.

Today physicians are able to diagnose autism earlier than when my son was a little boy, so the earlier your child is diagnosed the sooner therapeutic treatment can be applied. Beware all children don’t possess all of these signs and symptoms, and every child with autism doesn’t act the same.

Autism And Parenting

As a parent of a grown-up son with autism, I know how valuable good resources are. This book is a good resource for families, and if this interests you, I have listed the highlights below. If you are not in need or interested, I encourage you to move forward to my next paragraph. In my own opinion, I would have jumped on this when my son was just a little boy, and for the price of $20.95, this is a very good deal.

Spectrum Women

Full of wit and warm advice, this book empowers autistic parents and reassures them that autism is strength in raising their children with love, knowledge, and experience, while also giving non-autistic parents and professionals a fresh perspective on helping autistic children to thrive.

  • Three mothers reflect on their experiences of growing up as undiagnosed autistics, venturing into and embracing motherhood, and connecting with their children in a unique and powerful way.
  • They offer advice on overcoming the challenges of parenting when you are autistic, such as socializing with other parents or sensory issues that come with excessive touch.
  • Reflecting on their own experiences, they also emphasize the positives of being an autistic parent to an autistic child, such as understanding why their child is struggling or the open-mindedness that can come from not being constrained by societal norms.
  • They also explain how out-of-the-box thinking leads to the creative parenting of non-autistic children, forming strong and loving bonds.

Autism Alternative Therapies

As a parent, I would never recommend any medications in any of my articles, and one of the reasons is I feel this should be only used as a last resort. My son had more complications when put on medicine as a little boy, and from taking him off of them, and using the alternative therapies benefitted him so much more. I will be honest with you, I am not a physician or have any type of medical background, so this information is coming only from my own experience with my own son. You are wise to consult your child’s physician for treatment recommendations, so with that out of the way next is what worked for my own son.

  • The first positive change I noticed was changing his diet, you will find out many children with autism are extra sensitive to many types of foods. These food sensitivities are not your regular allergy symptoms, but they actually may increase their autism symptoms. For anyone interested in a good resource The Autism & ADHD Diet is a good place to start, so let’s go now to what is your next best step.
  • Children with this disorder usually are highly connected to music, so by using this you can provide them a healthy coping skill. Again I highly recommend parents and grandparents encouraging music into their child’s regular daily routine. If you happen to have a high-functioning child introducing them to a musical instrument can be the best thing you ever do, and music therapy is used regularly by therapists.
  • Another method used today that was not around when my son was a boy is relaxation therapies, and again this is used by therapists for these kids regularly.

If you are interested in going with natural alternative therapy, I highly recommend you consider the list above. You will find all of these are good even if you don’t suffer from autism, so even parents can benefit from using these to cope better with their stress today.

Autism Quotes

  • “My autism makes things shine. Sometimes I think it is amazing but sometimes it is sad when I want to be the same and talk the same and I fail. Playing the piano makes me very happy. Playing Beethoven is like your feelings – all of them – exploding.” — Artist Mikey Allcock
  •  “And now I know it is perfectly natural for me not to look at someone when I talk. Those of us with Asperger’s are just not comfortable doing it. In fact, I don’t really understand why it’s considered normal to stare at someone’s eyeballs.” — John Elder Robison
  •  “I always find it kind of funny that normal people are always saying autistic children ‘live in their own little world.’ When you work with animals for a while you start to realize you can say the same thing about normal people. There’s a great big, beautiful world out there that a lot of normal folks are just barely taking in. Autistic people and animals are seeing a whole register of the visual world normal people can’t, or don’t.” — Temple Grandin

If you enjoyed reading these quotes, you can read more on the website The Mighty, and I thank this site for publishing these inspirational quotes to share with you. Please be patient for my tips for supporting your child with autism during Halloween, and next, I want to share with you a recipe.

Kid-Friendly Autism Recipes

First, before sharing my recipe of the day, I want to share some of the things to avoid in your child’s diet. These children are much like people suffering from autoimmune diseases, and below are some of the main food triggers both of them experience.

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • High Carb Diets
  • Sugar

Now that I have given you some guidelines to consider, we can start preparing my recipe for you today.

Bacon-Wrapped Pineapple Bites

This recipe will not be pushed aside by your pickiest eater, and you can find more recipes such as Bacon Wrapped Pineapple Bites on the website Celiac.org.

What You Need

  • 1 Pound Bacon Slices
  • 20 Ounces Pineapple Chunks
  • 2 Tablespoons of Honey
  • 1/4 to 1/2 Teaspoon of Chipotle Chile Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon of Green Onion Thinly Slices and Optional

Let’s Get Started

  1. You will want to preheat your oven to 400 degrees
  2. While waiting for your oven line a sheet pan with aluminum foil
  3. Place your wire rack on the top
  4. Now cut each strip of your bacon slices in half
  5. Wrap your bacon strip around your pineapple chunk, you will want to skew in the middle of your pineapple chunk.
  6. Just repeat this process for all your chunks of pineapple
  7. Next, you are ready for the honey, you will want to drizzle the honey over your bacon wraps.
  8. Very sparingly sprinkle your chile powder next
  9. Bake for 30 minutes flipping over when the bacon is crisp on each side, garnish with the green onion if desired.

This really sounds like a fun and tasty treat for your picky eater, and the best part it is very healthy for them. Even though the recipe doesn’t suggest this, I would consider using turkey bacon for even a healthier snack.

Prayers For Autism Children

I am sure you are becoming impatient for your tips for supporting your child with autism during Halloween, and right after I share some prayers for these children we will be getting to the tips you have so patiently been waiting for.

Prayer for Children with Asperger’s Syndrome

Merciful Lord, please touch my son, and give him peace and guidance as he navigates through a world that is often confusing to him. Lift him out of the depression he often suffers because he is laughed at, isolated, and excluded at school and in social settings. Help him overcome awkwardness in communicating and catching social cues. Help him acquire good social skills, so he can develop friendships and have a sense of belonging. Heal his wounded heart and lack of self-worth.

Amen.

I stumbled upon this prayer while writing this article for you, and you can read more of these from the blog post 10 Uplifting Prayers for Autism.

How to celebrate Halloween with your child with autism

Tips For Supporting Your Child With Autism During Halloween

As I promised now you are going to receive my tips that you have been patiently waiting for, and I thank you for your patience to read my article on Free Family Solutions today.

  • Preparing your child with pictures and drawings is one way to get them ready for Halloween, you will need to prepare them for what activities are going to take place. This is really important if you are attending or having a party, and most of these kids need to ease into new things to avoid a panic attack.
  • Be sure to get them into the costume if they are dressing up before the big day arrives, you will want to be sure they are comfortable being dressed up to avoid problems.
  • For example, if your child is not comfortable with their costume or possibly wearing a mask, you never should force them. It might be best to provide them one of those eye masks instead of a face mask for some children, so these are something to consider.
  • Rehearse the trick or treat ritual by going to a family home before the big day, and grandparents are a good choice for rehearsing.
  • Avoid going to more houses than your child is comfortable, you will find for some of these kids even three to five houses is more than enough.
  • I would recommend taking them to homes they have been to before and are familiar with, so consider taking them to close neighbors and family before strange homes in the neighborhood.
  • For many kids celebrating Halloween at home works the best, and if you need ideas I have inserted a link above for you.

Thank you for reading tips for supporting your child with autism during Halloween, and I encourage you to leave me a comment if you have anything on your mind to share with me.

Halloween Books For Kids-From Babies To Teenagers

If you know me from Twitter as Just Call Me Jeff, you know how I support authors. I chose Halloween books for kids as my topic today for parents and grandparents, and the reason is reading needs to be encouraged in a child’s life even before they are able to talk or walk.

The Importance Of Children’s Books

You might be curious why this might be such an important topic to me, and I am going to share my story with you. You see when I was growing up I was not encouraged to read, and in fact, I can’t remember anyone in my family ever reading to me.  To be completely honest with you, I don’t think my parents ever sat down and read a book as far as I can recall. Anyway, the point I am going to make is this experience prevented me from reading any more than I absolutely had to, and that was only for school because I had no choice in the mater.

Why Reading To Babies Is So Important

For one thing, this can become a special time for you to bond with your baby, you also will find many mothers and fathers who read to a baby learns to talk sooner. This simple activity provides calmness for the majority of infants, and some say this calms their child down even better than just rocking them. Bright Horizons provides in their article more benefits you might be interested in knowing, so below I have listed some of them for you. I have included a link above to their article, so if you wish to read their entire blog post you are able to.

  • Good time to cuddle with your baby, and also the perfect time suggested in this article is right before bedtime. This is a good pre-bedtime ritual, to begin with, a newborn baby, so this first tip I am very impressed with and maybe you are as well?
  • Allow your infant to hold and explore what you are reading to them, and it is not important to complete the entire story. You are providing a great asset to their life by allowing them to explore, so maybe allowing them to chew on their storybook is not such a bad idea after all?
  • Even though this might sound strange at first, you should point out pictures and say their names out loud to your little one. This helps them to learn not only the names of the pictures earlier but also they say it helps many infants start to speak sooner.
  • By gradually lengthening your family time activity as your child grows is recommended, and as your little boy or girl shows more interest and can pay better attention this will help them learn.

These are the highlights of the article by Bright Horizons, and again you can visit the website by using the link above I shared with you.

Books To Read To Your Infant

With tons of books available it could be overwhelming for new parents to choose from, so what I suggest is you focus on the ones that are going to help your little one to learn. You can find a very large selection to choose from, and here are some that Care.com shares in their article. You can use the link I provided to read their entire list, and because their blog post list contains 30 of the best to consider, I am not even going to list them in this article.

Historical Animals By Moberg, Julia

I have chosen this book simply because animals are naturally an interest to us even as babies, so I think this would be a nice learning book to read to your infant. You can point at each animal and say its name, and this will get them to a good start at knowing the different ones. Being this is a historical themed book, you might even find this interesting to read yourself.

The Dogs, Cats, Horses, Snakes, Goats, Rats, Dragons, Bears, Elephants, Rabbits, and Other Creatures that Changed the World

Julia Moberg, Jeff Albrecht Studios

It is a fact many of the famous people in history have owned animals and pets, and even though we have never really mentioned these as often as we should, this could be a very good lesson for anyone of any age, even if you are an adult.  I really feel this would be a good choice to add to your child’s library, and we all know how children love animals, so how can you go wrong with reading this to your baby boy or baby girl?

  • Meet Alexander the Great’s horse Bucephalus
  •  Mozart’s starling bird that helped him write music by singing along as he composed.
  •  Ethiopian goats that discovered the coffee bean
  • Marco Polo seeing dragons in China
  •  A dog named Boatswain that saved Napoleon’s life
  • The cobra that killed Cleopatra
  • Cairo, the dog that helped hunt down Osama bin Laden

About The Author

Julia Moberg grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Southlake, Texas. She attended New York University where she received both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing at Tisch School of the Arts. She is the author of Skies Over Sweetwater, a young adult novel. She currently splits her time between Paris, France, and Nashville, Tennessee.

Sure this is not your ordinary baby storybook for sure, but imagine how much your little one can learn from you sharing history with them? The animals will be what interests them the most, but they will naturally learn simply by you reading this to them. If my sons were babies once again, I would seriously consider adding this to their library.

Next, we are going to talk about the terrible toddlers, and honestly, I have never met a toddler that was terrible in my entire life.  This list is from a website that is dedicated to this age group of children, so let’s see what they suggest for parents and grandparents to choose for a child.

  • The Hallo-Weiner
  • Happy Halloween Stinky Face
  • Big Pumpkin
  • The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
  • The Little Old Lady Who  Was Not Afraid Of Anything

Free Printable Halloween Coloring Pages For Toddlers

I must admit I have never heard of these Halloween books for kids before now, but they sound to be quite interesting to read to your toddlers. Even if they are able to read them for themselves, I suggest you coax them to read them to you. This is a great family time activity, and the entire family could participate in this to form an everlasting bond. As a freebie, I included a link to some coloring pages you can print and color with your little boy or girl, and this is another good activity to consider doing regularly as well.

We Are Teachers Best Halloween Reading

My next stop was a website by the name of We Are Teachers, and they have taken the time to provide us with an article with the 20 best Halloween books for older children. Candy Corn Is The Most Popular Halloween Candy

Candy Corn Recipe

Since candy corn is such in demand during this time of the year, I thought maybe some of you might be interested in learning how it is actually made? This recipe is provided by the Food Network, and the credit goes to a man by the name of Alton Brown.

What You Need

  • 4 1/2 Ounces of Powdered Sugar which is Approximately 1 1/2 Cups
  • 1/2 Ounce Nonfat Dry Milk, Approximately 6 1/2 Teaspoons
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 3 1/2 Ounces Granulated Suger, About a 1/2 Cup
  • 3 3/4 Ounces Light Corn Syrup, Equals to 1/3 of a Cup
  • 2 1/2 Tablespoons of Water
  • 2 Tablespoons of Unsalted Butter at Room Temperature
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 to 3 Drops Yellow and Orange Gel Paste Food Coloring

How To Make Your Candy Corn

  1. Combine your powdered sugar, dry milk, and salt in the bowl of a food processor.
  2. Pulse 4 to 5 times until the mixture is smooth. set aside for later
  3. Now you will combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water in a 2-quart pot
  4. Put over medium heat, cook, and cover for 4 minutes
  5. Next, you will add the butter, and clip on a candy thermometer
  6. Bring your mixture to the temperature of 230 degrees for about 1 to 2 minutes
  7. Now you are ready to take the mixture off of the heat, you can remove the candy thermometer as well
  8. Add the vanilla and the dry mixture at this time stirring continuously with a silicone spactula until well mixed
  9. Pour onto a half sheet pan lined with a silicone  baking mat
  10. Cool until the mixture is able to be handled which usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes
  11. Divide the dough into three equal parts, and add 2 drops of yellow food coloring to one part, and knead the dough until the color is consistent.
  12. Add 2 drops of orange food coloring to the second part or piece, and knead the dough until the color is consistent.
  13. You are going to leave the third part or piece white
  14. Roll each piece of dough to a strand about 18 inches long, and then cut each strand in half.
  15. Roll one of the white pieces about 1/2 inch thick, and about 22 inches long.
  16. Repeat this process with the yellow and the orange piece as well
  17. Lay the strands side-by-side and press them together, and then you will begin to cut them into 4 inch pieces.
  18. Lay the strands one at a time onto the silicone baking mat, and press into a wedge shape similar to a triangle shape.
  19. Use a wire butter slicer to cut the candies into pieces, you can also use a knife or a pizza cutter if you don’t have the wire butter slicer.
  20. Repeat this process with the remainder dough, lay the finished pieces on waxed  paper to dry about 1 hour.
  21. Store in a air tight container with waxed paper between each layer.

Wow, I don’t know about you but I think I will just go to my nearby Walmart and purchase my Candy Corn again this year. For someone who has the time and patience, you now have access to how to make Candy Corn all year round.

Halloween Prayer For Children

Halloween Prayer Poem For Children

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
First one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late!”
Second one said, “there are witches in the air!”
Third one said, “But we don’t care!”
Fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run.”
Fifth one said, “I’m ready for some fun.”
Oooooooooooooh went the wind.
Out went the light.
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!

It is amazing how some things sticks in our minds no matter how old we become, so please share this with your children and grandchldren so they too can remember this and pass it on to their own kids one day.

Nail Product Health Risks

With all the health problems in our society today, I feel it is important to consider the risks using these types of products. I am concerned since children begin using these at a very early age, and over time what effect could this have on our children’s health? The fingernail do’s and don’ts comes from the Mayo Clinic, you can use the link in this paragraph if you wish to read the entire article.

What To Look Out For

  • Change in color
  • Dark streak underneath your nail
  • Change of shape
  • Curling
  • Thinning or thickness
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Failure nail not to grow out

Fingernail Do’s

  • Keep dry & clean
  • Regular hygiene
  • Use moisturizers
  • Apply protective layer such as a nail hardener
  • Consult your physician about Biotin

Fingernail Don’ts

  • Avoid biting your nails
  • Never pick the skin around them
  • You should never pull off hangnails
  • Use fingernail products in moderation
  • Don’t ignore the signs above, and consult your physician immediately

These are very basic do’s and don’ts, but it is a good start to taking good care of your fingernails, I urge parents to keep an eye on these warning signs of their young children. It is very important people don’t overuse these products, and one of the most potent of these is fingernail polish remover. We are exposing ourselves to harsh chemicals pretty much every day, and we must start being more aware, how dangerous these chemicals have become to our immune systems.

Stay At Home Halloween Ideas-COVID Canceling Trick or Treat

Many parents are concerned about their children’s safety going trick or treating more this year than ever, so I decided to provide families this stay at home Halloween ideas article. I know I would be worried about my own children, so many of you might be asking yourself how can you celebrate without going out this year?

Trick or Treating Risks 2020

Of course, parents don’t want to disappoint their children going out at the end of October all dressed up as they have done for many years. So what exactly are the risks of allowing your children to go trick or treating this year, and it just happens I found this article from MSN and Good Housekeeping with tips for parents from the experts?

  • Avoid allowing your child to go with a large group of other children as they might do most other years, and forget about haunted houses are highly recommended. Both of these will cause a close distance between the children and experts suggest parents think about this carefully. Staying 6 feet apart is still recommended, but this may be more difficult with the excitement to get to the next house for their treats.
  • The face-to-face contact with the children and the people giving out treats is a high-risk situation according to the experts, and how many of your neighbors might not even be comfortable participating in this considering the situation?
  • With the touching of so many things on this special night is another risky situation, and parents might be concerned their children will be exposed and even bring the COVID-19 home with them. If you go out with your little ghosts and witches you should carry hand sanitizer and use it, between each of your hauntings.

Dr. Kesh explains, adding that some families may choose to trick-or-treat alone simply because they have at-risk family members at home.

  • As difficult as this is going to be you must set some rules your children must obey for their own safety, you want to be sure they don’t go digging around in their treat bag before they arrive back home. So it would be best for parents to accompany them to keep them safe, I can just imagine how tempting this would be for a little boy or girl to resist before returning home.
  • hand sanitizer alone is not enough, you must be sure your kids don’t touch their faces. Face touching especially around their nose and mouth is putting them at risk, so this is extremely important to be sure your little boy or girl understands.

Molly Hyde, MHS, CIC, an infection control practitioner in Maryland-based GBMC Healthcare. “If you are going to hand out candy in person, make sure you are wearing a face-covering over your nose and mouth when giving out candy.”

If you are going to take your little ghosts and witches trick or treating these are important tips to remember, and even though this is very important for a child it is not worth getting sick and possibly even ending up in the hospital. This is a very important and difficult decision for every parent to make, so what I suggest is to follow your heart.

I thought I would give you some non-candy treat ideas, so for anyone interested I have listed some below for you.

  • Bubbles are a great alternative to candy, and how many kids do you know would not be thrilled with a bottle or two of bubbles?
  • Another good choice would be play-doh, so maybe this is something you would consider giving to the little goblins in your neighborhood?
  • What child would not love to get freeze pops, and you might even become one of the favorite houses on their hauntings for years to come.
  • Another one that comes to mind is microwave popcorn, and this is a rather healthier option than candy.
  • I was just at the store this morning, and mini cheese balls caught my eye, and I thought these would make a great treat for the kiddies in my neighborhood.
  • How about chocolate oreo Halloween cookies, I also saw these this morning while doing some early morning grocery shopping.

If any of these interest you, I was doing my grocery shopping this morning at Walmart when these caught my eye. So next time you are there take a look around, and I am sure you will find even more alternatives to candy for the kiddies in your own neighborhood.

COVID-19 Update September 14 2020

I just thought I would share the COVID-19 update in this article for anyone interested, and this might help parents decide if allowing their children to go trick or treating is something they are going to do. If you do decide to give in to your kids going, I urge you to read over again the safety tips I provided earlier in this article. You must make this decision on your own, and to be completely honest with you I am not sure what I would do if my sons were not grown up and were little boys once again? The best I am able to do is provide you as much information in this article, and you will have to make the final decision about what is best for your own children. I really feel for you as parents and grandparents, but follow your heart and I will be praying for all of you and your children.

Prayer for Children’s Safety

Lord, Please keep them safe today. I ask that you would protect them from any harm or evil intent that would lurk close by, or attack them while they’re unaware. I ask for you to cover them in your care and hide them in the safety of your powerful presence. I pray for you to protect their coming and going, and to remind them that you’re always with them. Give them alertness, spiritual discernment, and wisdom to avoid temptation and to make the best choices.I thank you God, that you walk ahead of them, beside them, and behind them too. So I can trust you to always lead the way, be constantly at their side, and to have their back too, all at the same time. Amen.

If you are interested in more prayers for your children you can visit the website Crosswalk for powerful prayers for protection and hope for your child and your family.
