Today I decided to write an article on alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas for children, and the reason for this is with so many kids experiencing food sensitivities and allergies this might benefit some families. If this is interesting to you, I have inserted a link above to take you to the best selling choices Amazon provides. I will earn a small commission from any of your purchases, which will be used to improve Free Family Solutions.

Food Allergy Triggers In Candy

The reason I chose this topic is that I struggle with many foods from my own food allergies and sensitivities, and the worse part is many times parents might not even be aware their child is sensitive to what is in the candy. How many of you can afford to have your children tested, and from my own experience those tests are not even always accurate. For any family interested if your insurance does not cover these tests you can be talking a whole lot of money, but did you know you can purchase home tests from Amazon for much less?

  • Milk
  • Soy
  • Peanuts
  • Eggs
  • Tree Nuts
  • Coconut
  • Gluten (Wheat, Rye, and Barley)
  • Modified Food Starch

I have provided you the most commonly known products in candy to be aware of, but I want to let you know even if none of these allergens are in the candy they can be contaminated when the company produces other products.  You will find very few companies that are going to take the time to clean and sterilize their equipment before preparing the safer alternatives, and in very small writing you will find this on the packages by law. Before sharing the alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas, Let us look at some of my favorite candy brands.

Reeses Peanut Butter Cups Ingredients

Being sensitive to peanuts I have to be careful how many Reeses Peanut Butter Cups I eat, but I am lucky enough to get away with being able to have them in moderation. Beware peanuts are one of the ingredients in candy more children are sensitive to, and some kids can end up in the hospital or even worse by eating just one peanut butter cup. The reason for this is their throats can inflame causing them unable to breathe, so this is my major concern for parents and their children.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa
  • Butter
  • Chocolate
  • Non-Fat Milk
  • Milk Fat
  • Lactose
  • Soy
  • Lecithin
  • PGPR
  • Preservatives (TBHQ)
  • Peanuts
  • Dextrose
  • Salt

You might be surprised just how many ingredients are in this candy brand, and as much as I love them myself I must be extra careful how many I eat at any time. I am always shopping for alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas myself, so together we can go shopping together.

As much as kids love peanut butter it can be an allergy trigger food

M & Ms Ingredients

Even if you choose the M & Ms without peanuts you still might not be completely safe, and besides there being other allergy triggers in regular M & Ms, there still could be traces of peanuts as well. You will find this on their packages in small print, so to be safe you should avoid this brand completely if you are allergic to peanuts.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Chocolate
  • Skim Milk
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Lactose
  • Milk Fat
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Salt
  • Artificial Flavoring
  • Sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Corn Syrup
  • Dextrin
  • Artificial Coloring
  • Gum Acacia

I have only listed the ingredients in the regular M & Ms, but I am sure you can see there are several possible allergy triggers in this not to count there might be traces of peanuts as well.

Snicker Bar Ingredients

Another one of my favorites is Snicker Bars, and again it is full of peanuts so is one I am not able to have very often as well. If you start reading ingredients you might be surprised how many allergens there might be waiting for your kids, so as parents we do need to start reading the packages carefully before giving them to our children.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Chocolate
  • Skim Milk
  • Lactose
  • Milk Fat
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Artificial Flavoring
  • Peanuts
  • Corn Syrup
  • Palm Oil
  •  Hydrated Soy Bean Oil

  • Egg Whites

I will not go through all the companies and their ingredients, but I just wanted to list several of my favorites that I am not able to eat regularly myself with you. Now I am going to share with you the candy bars with fewer allergy triggers. So if you are not eating alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas, you at least are getting to know what to ingredients and brands to avoid.

Ghost quotes for your imagination

“In Eastern culture, people see ghosts, people talk about ghosts… it’s just accepted. And in Western culture it’s just not.” — Jessica Alba

“I fully believe in ghosts. I have, my entire life. The first house I ever lived in was haunted. There was a grave of a man in the backyard. I was just a baby then, but my parents would tell me that every night, at the same time, they would hear someone walking up the stairs.” — Meaghan Rath

Better Candy Bar Choices

To be honest with you there is no brand on the market that I know of that is healthy for us, but we all need to indulge every once in a while with something yummy to put into our tummy. So next, I am going to share with you the brands that do contain fewer triggers.

  • Hershey’s Bars
  • 3 Musketeers
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Butterfinger
  • Baby Ruth

The list above brands contains three or less allergens, so these are healthier choices for your kids. I still recommend you read the packages, you never know when a company might change their ingredients.

Parents Prayer For COVID-19

As parents, we fear more for our children than we do ourselves when it comes to the COVID-19 virus, so for all of your families in need of prayer for your children today I have shared this one below for all of you.

I admit I fear the unknown. I fear how others will act during this time of uncertainty, how long this will last, and not knowing what the world will look like for my children when this is over. Father, calm my heart. Help me to trust you. Please keep my children safe from this virus. Please allow me to stay healthy so that I can take care of them. Help me to rest at night, so that I have energy and clarity of mind. Keep me focused on you, so that I can fill my children with encouragement and not panic. Help us to not grow weary of one another while we’re home together for who knows how long. Show me how to make the most of this time and disciple my children with a new urgency.

Alternative Non Candy Halloween Treat Ideas

The holidays are very difficult for me, you see I have many food allergies and sensitivities plus intolerances. So this time of the year is a challenge for me to stay healthy,  and when you are not able to eat the majority of the goodies everyone else can it is very hard. As a boy, it was even worse being tempted with all my grandmother’s home-made specials she never made any other time of the year. I am totally intolerant of gluten and dairy products, so you can just imagine how the aroma of the traditional foods are tempting for me.  Let us see what is available today for kids with food allergies and intolerances, and this will never be as good as the goodies we are missing, but they can make the holiday easier for the children.

  • Bubbles are always a good choice for kids, and now I hear you can even get Halloween bubbles.
  • Another goodie to spice up a child’s holiday is play dough, and I can remember my grandmother always preparing me her special home-made play dough
  • I have never met any boy or girl who does not love freeze pops, so this can be a very good alternative to candy.
  • As a boy I always received Halloween activity books and stickers, I also loved puzzle books so I often received a good supply on the holidays.
  • Stamper kits are a favorite especially for toddlers, and at their age, these kits are a much better choice than a ton of candy.
  • Coloring books are also a popular substitute, and when you purchase one with the holiday theme you can’t go wrong.
  • Art & Craft Kits for kids is way better than a bunch of candy, so consider introducing your child to a new hobby.
  • Glow Stick necklaces and bracelets will impress any child, and this is something they may have never received before now?
  • Skull rings could be a treat your own child would cherish, you can get these in art creativity kits at a very affordable price.
  • Something called slime is very popular with children, I even notice my teenage niece still has this from time to time.

I try to recommend parents provide their children books as much as possible, so I have some books that might be great choices as alternative non candy Halloween treat ideas.

You can get these and many more great choices, and you can check these out with this link that will take you to the Amazon website.
